Chapter Nine

The meeting with the Collective Council went as I expected. Except for Walid and Jebe, none of the others appeared happy to be there. Walid was taller than the average Hunta female, with dull yellow feathers. She seemed genuinely interested in our investigation of her predecessor’s death As for Jebe, between the cloak, hood, and the tentacles, who knows what a Dagon is thinking?

Flandry started the fun. When I greeted the council members with, “Thank you all for coming,” he replied, “It’s not like we had a choice.”

“You did have a choice, Ambassador Flandry. You could have refused to come. Of course, your refusal would have been recorded for the record.”

“You mean, I’d be marked absent like in school.”

“Well, you are here to learn something.”

I do not know how this was translated to the other members, but it did get the equivalent of a chuckle out of them, again, except for Jebe. I think. Maybe a certain pattern of tentacles means laughter.

I had Loy wait just outside the conference room with the door cracked open so he could hear. After my “pleasant” exchange with Flandry, I called out, “Bring him in, Loy.”
